Aspull sits on a high ridge about three miles northeast of Wigan, a position that gives the village a distinctly different feel from the more industrial valley floor. Historically, it was a busy coal mining and cotton milling hub, but today it functions largely as a residential community defined by its proximity to the Haigh Woodland Park. Local life tends to center on the Fingerpost junction, and while it has grown significantly with modern housing, it retains a series of older gritstone rows that hint at its industrial past. To the north and east, the landscape opens out into expansive greenbelt land, offering clear views towards Winter Hill and the West Pennine Moors. It is a practical spot for those commuting towards Manchester or Bolton, yet it manages to keep a foot in the countryside, particularly around the canal shortcuts and the sprawling woodland trails that border the village.
