Waterlooville sits just north of Portsdown Hill, serving as a practical gateway between the coastal bustle of Portsmouth and the quieter, wooded reaches of the Meon Valley. The town’s unusual name dates back to 1815, when soldiers returning from the Battle of Waterloo stopped at a local hostelry - then known as the Heroes of Waterloo - and many decided to settle in the surrounding Forest of Bere. Today, the town is defined by its sprawling residential character and a large, pedestrianised shopping precinct that forms the spine of the community. It is well-connected by the A3(M), making it a logical base for those working along the South Coast or commuting toward Guildford. While much of the old forest has been replaced by housing, nearby Queen Elizabeth Country Park provides a vast amount of green space for walking and cycling, maintaining a sense of the rural Hampshire landscape that originally drew settlers here two centuries ago.
