Romiley sits on the rising ground between the Tame and Goyt valleys, offering a distinct sense of separation from the more urban stretches of Greater Manchester. Historically a farming hamlet that expanded with the arrival of the Peak Forest Canal and the railway, it has managed to retain a village-like layout centred around a busy stretch of independent shops and an active community theatre. The geography here is a major draw; you can walk from the railway station into the deep woodland of Etherow Country Park or up to the ridge at Werneth Low in relatively short order. While it serves as a practical base for those working in Stockport or Manchester, the presence of the canal - with its well-preserved flight of locks at Marple nearby - and the surrounding greenbelt gives the area a surprisingly rural edge that defines its character.
