Tucked into a sweeping loop of the River Thames, Shepperton feels more like a self-contained village than a London suburb, despite being less than 20 miles from the city centre. Life here is defined by the water; the High Street ends almost directly at the riverbank, where the manual ferry still carries passengers across to Weybridge, a route that has existed for centuries. It is a place of quiet lanes and green spaces like Manor Park, though it is perhaps most famous globally for the namesake film studios on its northern edge, which have been a major local employer since the 1930s. Geographically, it sits on a flat, low-lying floodplain, which gives the area a distinct, open feel, though it means the town is crisscrossed by many small waterways and reservoirs. While the railway station serves as a terminus for the line into Waterloo, the pace of life remains noticeably slower here, centred around the historic church square and the independent shops that have managed to hold their ground over the decades.
