Polegate is a town defined by its practical geography, sitting just five miles inland from Eastbourne at the foot of the South Downs. Originally a small settlement, its modern identity was shaped almost entirely by the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, which transformed a scattering of dwellings into a busy junction. Today, the railway remains the town’s heartbeat, providing direct lines to London Victoria, Gatwick, and across the coast, while the A27 and A22 intersect nearby, making it one of the most accessible points in East Sussex. Historically, the area was notable for its milling; the 19th-century Windmill at nearby Ovendean is a well-preserved landmark that still overlooks the town. Stretching out from the residential streets is the Cuckoo Trail, a 14-mile shared-use path following the route of a redundant railway line that offers a flat, green corridor for walkers and cyclists heading north toward Heathfield. It is a level, functional town where the convenience of the transport links is balanced by the immediate proximity of the South Downs National Park.
