Newent is a quiet market town tucked into the north-western corner of Gloucestershire, sitting about eight miles from Gloucester and just a short drive from the Herefordshire border. It is largely defined by its distinct red-sandstone soil, which has historically made the surrounding land excellent for fruit growing, particularly the wild daffodils and apples that the area is still known for today. At its heart, the town is centred around a black-and-white half-timbered Market House that dates back to the 17th century, a reminder of its long history as a regional trading hub. Life here tends to revolve around the high street’s independent shops and the lake at Newent Park, which offers a decent space for walking right in the centre of town. While it feels rural - surrounded by the undulating hills of the Leadon Valley - it is practical for commuters, being only a few miles from the M50 motorway. It’s the kind of place where the bypass keeps the heaviest traffic away from the centre, leaving the narrow streets to maintain a sense of scale that hasn't changed much in decades.
