Lytham St Annes sits on the Fylde coast, right where the Ribble Estuary meets the Irish Sea. While often grouped together, Lytham and St Annes began as distinct settlements: Lytham is the older of the two, mentioned in the Domesday Book, while St Annes was largely planned as a nineteenth-century Victorian resort. This history is reflected in the landscape today, with the famous Lytham Windmill standing on the expansive Green and the traditional pier reaching out from the St Annes promenade. Geographically, the area is define by its flat, sandy terrain and the Ribble Marshes, which provide a vital habitat for migratory birds. The climate is typical of the Northwest - often breezy and bracing - but the town is protected from the worst of the swells by the estuary’s sandbanks. Beyond the seafront, the area is well-known for its world-class links golf courses and a town layout that prioritises wide avenues and open public squares, a legacy of the Clifton family who once owned the surrounding estates.
