Perched on the cliffs above the River Nidd, Knaresborough is defined by its dramatic vertical layout and its landmark Victorian railway viaduct. While it is often grouped with its more formal neighbour, Harrogate, it retains a distinct, rugged character rooted in its history as a medieval market town. Life here tends to centre around the high street and the market square - which still hosts a weekly market every Wednesday - while the lower part of town, down by the water, offers a completely different atmosphere of steep steps and riverside paths. It’s a practical place to live for those working in Leeds or York, with the railway station sitting right in the middle of town, but it feels self-contained. You’ll find all the essentials along the main streets, from independent butchers to the local library, and while the ruins of the 12th-century castle and the Mother Shipton’s cave site bring in the crowds on sunny weekends, there are plenty of quiet, leafy walks through the Nidd Gorge that only locals tend to use.
