Pity Me sits just a few miles north of Durham’s historic city centre, functioning as a settled suburban pocket that has long outlived its curious name. While local folklore offers various origins - ranging from a corruption of the French *Petit Mere* (small lake) to a more literal reference to the area’s difficult agricultural soil - it is now a practical base defined by its proximity to both the city and the A167. Much of the housing dates from the mid-20th century onwards, providing a contrast to the medieval density of nearby Durham. Residents generally rely on the Arnison Centre, a large retail park within walking distance, for their main shops and amenities. Despite its proximity to urban hubs, the village retains a connection to the landscape through the nearby Brasside Ponds and the open fields that still separate it from the neighbouring village of Framwellgate Moor. It is a quiet, functional place that serves those who need quick access to the university or the station, without the constant bustle of the city's tourist core.
