Saltdean sits in a distinct natural dip in the chalk cliffs about five miles east of Brighton, where the South Downs meet the Channel. Developed primarily in the 1920s and 30s as a planned suburb, it feels different from its neighbours because it isn't squeezed between the hills; it follows the curve of the vale inland. The landmark that defines the area is the Grade II* listed Saltdean Lido, a striking piece of Art Deco architecture that has been restored as a community hub with an outdoor pool and library. Life here is dictated by the landscape: the Undercliff Walk provides a flat, sea-level route for miles towards Brighton Marina, while the northern end of the village peters out into the open trails of the National Park. It is a quiet, residential pocket that retains a sense of space, though the bypass - the A259 - is the singular, sometimes busy artery that connects it to the city.
