Pencoed sits on the eastern edge of Bridgend, occupying a practical spot where the coastal plain begins to roll into the foothills of the mid-Glamorgan valleys. Its name, which translates from Welsh as "head of the woods," hints at its rural origins, though today it functions as a busy, self-contained town. Historically, it grew from a farming hamlet into a significant settlement during the industrial era, though it avoided the heavy scarring of the deep mining valleys further north. Geographically, it is defined by its excellent transport links; it is one of the few towns of its size in the region to retain its own railway station on the South Wales Main Line and sits immediately beside Junction 35 of the M4. This makes it a logical base for those working in Cardiff or Swansea, yet it manages to keep a distinct village feel within its centre. The Ewenny River skirts the southern edge of the town, providing some green relief, and the nearby Pencoed Technology Park has shifted the local economy from its traditional roots toward modern industry and research. Living here means having the amenities of a large town on your doorstep while remaining only a short drive from the rugged coastline of the Heritage Coast.
