Handsworth sits about three miles northwest of Birmingham city centre, acting as a key link between the urban core and the Black Country. It is a geographically diverse area, defined largely by its Victorian roots and the sprawling 100-acre expanse of Handsworth Park, which has served as the locality’s focal point since the 1880s. Historically, the area was a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution; it was the home of James Watt and Matthew Boulton, and their Soho Manufactory once stood near the boundary with Hockley. Today, the landscape is a mix of grand, high-ceilinged villas and traditional red-brick terraces, centered around the busy arterial routes of the Soho Road and Holyhead Road. These main thoroughfares provide direct access to the M5 motorway and are served by frequent bus routes and the nearby West Midlands Metro, making it one of the most accessible parts of the city for those navigating the wider West Midlands.
