Great Chart sits just a couple of miles west of Ashford, though it manages to retain the distinct identity of a traditional Kentish village. Historically, it was a more significant settlement than its now-larger neighbor, situated on the Roman road towards the Weald. Today, the village center is defined by a cluster of listed buildings, many built from local ragstone, fanning out from the medieval St Mary the Virgin Church which occupies the highest point in the village. Life here offers a practical balance: you are surrounded by open farmland and ancient woodland like Godinton Park, yet the proximity to the A28 and Ashford International means London or the coast are easily accessible. It is a place of footpaths and quiet lanes, where the geography feels rural even though the amenities of a major town are only a short drive away.
