Alston sits high in the North Pennines, claiming the title of the highest market town in England at about 1,000 feet above sea level. Its geography is defined by the steep, cobbled climb of Front Street and its position at the crossroads of the A686 and A689, which connect it to Penrith, Hexham, and Haltwhistle. Historically, the town’s stone buildings and narrow ‘butts’ grew around the lead mining and wool industries, leaving behind a compact, functional layout that remains largely unchanged. Living here means adapting to the elements; the weather is famously firm, and winter snow often lingers longer on the moors than in the valleys below. It is a self-contained community with its own schools, a local hospital, and a range of independent shops, all set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that feels distinctly remote despite being within reach of the larger Cumbrian and Northumbrian hubs.
